Why work with a small business that specializes in professional services?

It’s the marathon week of Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday. Holiday music will be playing, too much food will be eaten, and 2024 is right around the corner. When I think about Small Business Saturday, retail, holiday shopping, and locally owned restaurants come to mind. I’m looking forward to visiting small businesses in those categories this weekend and throughout the season, particularly those that are woman or minority owned.

But this Small Business Saturday, while you’re browsing the racks or enjoying a holiday performance, I encourage you not to forget about the small businesses providing professional services that can help support you and your organization.

According to the US Chamber of Commerce, there are more than 33 million small businesses in the United States. Of those, the US Small Business Administration reports that in 2022, more than 4.5 million businesses were classified as within the Professional, Scientific, or Technical Services category, making professional services the largest group of small businesses.

What are the benefits to working with a small business that specializes in providing professional services?

  • Boutique experience – At Sarah Wood Communication, we pride ourselves on delivering a boutique experience. We’re all about quality and developing relationships, not quantity. You’ll get a hands-on, customized experience that’s dedicated to helping your organization illuminate your good work and share your story with targeted audiences.

  • Direct access to expertise – I’m a solopreneur, so when you sign on as a client with Sarah Wood Communication, you’re getting me, myself, and I, plus all my years of communication experience. I’m used to working hand in hand with C-suite and communication staff to help develop goals, create content and key messaging, and help strategically fill an organization’s communication needs.

  • Pricing – Small businesses that specialize in professional services typically have lower overhead costs than larger corporations, meaning more of what you pay is going to support the salary, time, and direct services you’re receiving. That can result in a better deal for you, and as a bonus, you get to feel good about where your money is going, since you are directly contributing to the success of a business and the people and families that depend on that business for their livelihoods.

  • Help your local economy – Shopping local and shopping small helps keep money in your local economy. And the same is true for small businesses offering professional services. We live, work, and spend money in the same places as you. And when we’re looking to partner, subcontract, or refer another service-based business, we’ll reach out to our local small business network first.

So this holiday season and throughout the year, if you need professional services, think small. Small but mighty.
